Jean Chapman

Author

Jean Chapman is one of Australia’s best-known and best-loved storytellers. Her rapport with young children, her favourite audience, is almost legendary. She began writing stories for pre-school children for the ABC Kindergarten of the Air and her early success with this age group resulted in an invitation to join the ABC's scriptwriting school. Here, she learned the exacting requirements of writing for both radio and television.

Jean has written a number of texts for picture books, a genre for which she has a keen appreciation. She is also widely known for her retelling of traditional stories and old tales and her themed collections of stories, poems and songs such as Velvet Paws and Whiskers and Pancakes and Painted Eggs.

Jean is a dedicated writer for the young and she always tells a story in her own light, lively and direct style.
