Rolf Heimann’s intricate illustrations are both captivating and perplexing, and it is not surprising that, as a child, he missed out on winning children’s art competitions because judges thought his work so sophisticated that it must have been done by his father!
Born in Germany, Rolf was 15 when he escaped from the East prior to the construction of the Berlin Wall. He worked as a cabinet-maker and later moved on to an ad agency in Frankfurt. At 18 he saw an advertisement to attract German migrants to Australia and decided to emigrate.
To show his gratitude to Australia for providing him with a home, Rolf’s detailed illustrations always include a map of Australia.
‘Ever since I was naturalised as an Australian I’ve hidden the map in everything I do. It might be a patch on a sleeve, a reflection in a puddle or a flower.’
His love of Australia is also evidenced in the colourful spreads in Sydney Through Time. The pen, ink and watercolour images provide an amazing overview of the evolution of the city from prehistoric time to present.
Rolf has also illustrated For Eagle Eyes Only ; Mind Munchers; and Amazing Mazes. ‘Kids love exploring and discovering. Above all, they love a challenge and they love to be amazed.’
