Kim Gamble has vivid memories of ‘summer storms, long grass in vacant blocks, fruit trees, chooks, an old dairy, bush trails and a river’. This river, the Lane Cove River, became his inspiration for the setting of Bunyips Don’t! Kim used rich, deep watercolour on Arches paper to recreate the dank creek landscape.
Kim’s career in illustration began in 1988 when he started illustrating for NSW School Magazine. In 1992, Kim’s first illustrated book, The Magnificent Nose and Other Marvels, won the Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year for Younger Readers Award.
He has also illustrated The Hottest Boy Who Ever Lived; Tashi; Tashi and the Giants; Come the Terrible Tiger; and Dear Fred, and, for Scholastic Australia and Omnibus Books, Buster’s Custard; Bella of Bananaland; Bunyips Don’t!; and Let’s Escape, written by Mike Dumbleton.
In 2001, Pog was named as an Honour Book in the CBC Book of the Year Awards.
Kim works full-time as an illustrator.
