Lloyd Foye

Illustrator

Lloyd Foye began working as an art director in advertising. He then decided to become an illustrator and has been illustrating for advertising and books for many years. Lloyd escaped the big city and now lives on the Central Coast of NSW at North Avoca, overlooking a lagoon. His home is surrounded by trees and he has a large studio full of paintings and illustrations.

Lloyd spends a lot of time fine-tuning the design for a book. Because of his background in advertising and graphic design, his suggestions for the cover design and typography are often followed through in the finished book.

Lloyd shows a deep understanding of the characters in the books he illustrates and naturally he spends a lot of time developing the characters and planning the book. He begins with a sketch of the characters, and follows up with a storyboard. Then he develops his work into roughs, and finally the finished illustration. Lloyd likes his illustrations to perfectly capture the mood of the character and the story. If an illustration does not meet his high standards, he will do a second or third illustration until he is happy with the work.

Lloyd was born in South Africa and moved to Australia in 1980.
