Mark Carthew is a highly regarded primary teacher, sessional lecturer, and conference and workshop presenter. He mixes his passion for editing and writing with his love of teaching, books, music and the performing arts. He also loves surfing, bush walking and playing guitar!
His involvement with internationally regarded illustrator Peter Gouldthorpe in the Blends series (Short-listed for The Australian Excellence in Educational Publishing Awards) has been followed up by two new exciting series—The award- winning and internationally acclaimed illustrated drama script series VoiceWorks, and the recently released Chatterbox series, both of which have attracted significant interest in Australia and overseas.
His picture book of quirky rhymes and riddles, Newts, Lutes and Bandicoots, published by Scholastic Australia and illustrated by English Illustrator Mike Spoor, was a project spanning almost seven years.
Mark says, ‘I actually had the idea for this book seven years ago when I took long service leave from teaching just to write. I had so many ideas that I was just bursting at the seams! I was inspired to write something based on the ends of words and I felt that rhymes and riddles would be a fun way to go. There seemed to be lots of books based on beginning word concepts, but very few dealing with word endings. The more research I did, the more passionate I became about the concept.’
