I've always loved writing. Unfortunately my handwriting has always been horrendous. No matter how hard I try it always comes out looking like a cockroach has stepped in some ink and crawled across the page. My English teacher used to get quite frustrated with me sometimes. She was always writing sarcastic comments at the bottom of my essays. Things like – ‘What language is this?' or ‘Isn't it about time you stopped writing with your feet?'
Lucky for me, some smartypants came along and invented the typewriter! There was no stopping me after that.
I was rather looking forward to writing all about myself too. (It's my fifth favourite subject.) But when my wife Marion told me I shouldn't mention that my parents were pirates, or tell about the time I climbed Mount Everest in my underpants (just because they weren't true!!), I suddenly couldn't think of a single interesting thing to write about.
So all I'll say is I live in a house with a grass roof in the middle of nowhere in the far south of the South Island of New Zealand. If it was any closer to the South Pole, my neighbours would be penguins.
When I'm not writing I'm either in my garden singing to my vegies, in the creek swimming or off exploring the strange land I've discovered at the back of my wardrobe. (OK, that last bit may not be completely true…)
I've written four picture books so far.
The Hoppleplop, The Bear in the Room Next Door, Kiss, Kiss. Yuck! Yuck! (which won the Joy Cowley Award 2005), and No Room for a Mouse (April 2007).
Kyle was born in Brisbane, Australia. He completed his Bachelor of Business (Advertising and Journalism) at the Queensland Institute of Technology. Kyle travelled Europe before settling in New Zealand in 1990.
