Yvonne Morrison writes…

I move around a lot, from city to city, trying new things, and dragging three cats and one husband along with me. They are very patient!

Doing lots of different things stops me from getting bored . . . I love not having a proper job! As well as writing storybooks, I write science and social studies books for older children, teach dancing to adults, volunteer at a zoo, and I am also a student. I am studying the care of wild animals and I hope to work at an animal sanctuary or zoo in the future. I especially love Australian native animals. Animals have great personalities, which make them fun characters to write about!

My first job was being a scientist, and then I became a primary school teacher. I taught all ages, from 5 to 12. My favourite subjects to teach were art, science and writing. I never planned on being a writer, although I have always enjoyed reading. But, one day, an idea for a book popped, fully formed, into my head, so I wrote it down, sent it in, and it was a success! I guess you never know what you can do until you try.

What would be my advice to budding writers out there? Like any skill, writing takes practice. The more you write, the better you'll become. Read a lot, and notice the way good writers write. Keep a diary of interesting things you notice about people, places and objects. And lastly, I hate to say it, but your teachers are right – editing really is important!
