Running a Book Club

How do I become a Scholastic Book Club customer?

Teachers, please call our Customer Service department toll-free at 1 800 021 233 to receive your account number and additional information about Book Clubs.

How many Book Club booklets should I order for my students?

Scholastic Book Club booklets each contain 16 student brochures nested together, so for the average class you will require two booklets per club. If you have a composite class with different abilities you can order one booklet from each of two clubs.

What books and other items can I expect to see on Book Club?

Chosen by expert editors, the selections cover a wide variety of formats, genres and themes. They include classics, award winners, recently released titles and books related to other popular children's media such as movies and television shows. Children improve their reading skills BY READING, so providing the books they will WANT to read is a priority.

For reluctant readers, reading practice is encouraged by the inclusion of such items as software, puzzles, activity packs and games.

What other professional resources can I access through Book Club?

  • Each issue you will receive a copy of TBS (Teacher's Bookshelf), giving you practical, up-to-date classroom resources at discount prices. Materials are often grouped under special or seasonal themes to assist your planning of particular topics.
  • You may also earn and spend Reading Rewards at the Classroom Essentials catalogue at which features hundreds of exciting products to cover all your classroom needs, including magazines, professional development seminars and literacy resources.

How do I run a Book Club?

It's easy! Eight times a year you'll receive your Book Club ordering materials. Keep the teacher's guide and hand out copies of the Book Club brochure to students. You may wish to go over the student brochure in class so students can be directed to particular books that will interest them. Be sure to set a date for students to return their order forms to you. Collect the order forms and money as they come in. You can mail, fax, telephone or send us your orders online and earn Bonus Coupons and Free Picks for your class! These Bonus Rewards can be used to build a great classroom library. Reading Rewards earned on each order can be put towards any future Scholastic product purchases!

How do I keep track of students' orders?

Make sure that each student's name is on their order form! Collect and tally your students' orders on the class order form provided. Return this order form with attached cheque (or cheques) in postage-paid envelope provided. Here's a handy tip to stay organised: keep a Book Club folder! File student orders in it until you actually place your classroom order. Then, when your order arrives, match books to student orders, and file away your packing slip and original order form for your reference. Write your customer account number and the customer service telephone number inside your folder for easy reference.

How can I make ordering easier?

Here are some terrific tips for making ordering easier:

  • Insert the due date for students on their order forms, and post the date in the classroom. Give students a reminder a few days prior to the due date.
  • Enlist the help of a parent volunteer to organise and send in the orders.
  • Get your students involved! Kids love to help hand out the student brochures, collect orders and pass out the books. (You'll want to handle the money, of course.)
  • The hardest part is keeping track of loose change. Encourage students and their parents to pay by cheque, payable to Scholastic Australia Pty Limited, or credit card, using the credit card payment form under the student order form.

How can I increase classroom participation?

Here are some ways other teachers have increased classroom participation in Book Clubs:

  • Kids love looking at the offer (student brochure) when it arrives. Have them point out books that especially interest them.
  • Allow students who are familiar with a particular book or author to share their enthusiasm.
  • Point out one or two books to each student that you know they would just love to read.
  • Go online to check out press and student reviews of books.
  • Remind students to bring in their order forms!

How do I get parents involved?

Attach a note to the student brochure reminding parents of the due date for orders. You may want to send a letter home with the first Book Club offer encouraging them to participate. Let parents know how important a home filled with books is for creating a lifelong reader. Tell parents that their child's order helps you get free books and materials that the whole class can use and enjoy. Keep parents up-to-date on featured books that supplement what you are doing in the classroom. You may want to send a special letter home each month with the order. Be sure to remind them, again, about the Book Clubs on Parent-Teacher nights.

Encourage parents to start a reading club with other families based on Book Club selections.

I am home schooling my children. Can I run a Scholastic Book Club?

Yes! School market restrictions apply to many of the books we offer. This means that we cannot accept orders from home addresses except from a legal home school (which qualifies as a school market).

We will require a signed letter of verification stating that you are home schooling your children. Please remember to include the number of children and their ages. Kindly forward the letter to:

Placing Book Club orders

Can my students order from more than one club?

Yes! Each issue, your class can participate in as many Book Clubs as you wish. Some teachers offer students additional clubs to cater for a wider range of reading abilities or to give their students' families access to suitable books for younger or older siblings.

How do I place a Book Club order?

Australia Post will usually advise you by return call after they have checked the warehouse or the delivery driver returns from his deliveries-often in these cases the missing carton is still on the delivery truck. Australia Post will gladly arrange redelivery of this carton to the school. Contact Customer Service on 1800 021 233 if further problems arise or if Australia Post cannot locate your carton.

What if an ordered book becomes unavailable?

If replenishment stock is scheduled to reach Scholastic, the item will be placed on back order. You will be informed of such a situation on the Tax Invoice. If we are unable to supply a title, a Credit Voucher is sent in lieu of the product PLUS a specially selected FREE consolation book.

Parent's Guide to Scholastic Book Clubs

What is a Scholastic Book Club?

Simply put, a Scholastic Book Club is the easiest, most reliable way to get your child excited about reading! There is a Book Club for every grade level from preschool through to junior high. Each Club is exclusively school-based, and is run by a classroom teacher or volunteer. Each month in the Scholastic Book Club student brochure, your child will find a terrific selection of new and noteworthy fiction, classics, award-winning titles, perennial favourites, reference books, sports books and more.

Book Clubs offer a convenient way to purchase the best books at huge discounts. Prices are as low as $1.00. Plus, if you're ever dissatisfied with an item, it may be returned for a full refund, no questions asked.

By participating in Scholastic Book Clubs, your child's teacher can earn FREE teaching materials and resources for their classroom. Every order you or your child places earns Reading Reward Points that your child's school can use to choose FREE classroom resources from the Classroom Bonus catalogue, Classroom Essentials catalogue or to choose FREE books from each issue of Book Club.

How Does a Scholastic Book Club Work?

  1. Twice each term, teachers distribute the Book Club brochures to their students.
  2. Students take the flyers home to select books, software or other items with their parents.
  3. Students return order forms and payments to the school. You can write one cheque to Scholastic Australia Pty Limited, no matter how many of our Book Clubs you choose to order from.
  4. Teachers place the classroom order with Scholastic Australia.
  5. Within three weeks, the box of books arrives in your child's classroom. The day that the books arrive is one of the most exciting for students and teachers.
  6. Students enjoy their new books! When your child gets to choose their very own books, reading becomes a joy and an adventure. That excitement can carry over into a lifelong love of reading. Also, the earlier students become independent readers, the more likely they are to succeed in school.

How can I get involved in Scholastic Book Clubs?

Scholastic Book Clubs are licensed to run exclusively through the school. Many parents get involved by helping their child's teacher run the Book Club each month. Contact your school to find out more!

Scholastic Australia is your partner in helping your child fall in love with books and become a great reader. That's why we're here.
Happy Reading!
