Children with Special Needs          NEW!

Ian Lillico (K-12)

This seminar will explore teaching, motivating and managing young people with special needs
in schools. There will be an emphasis on two major groups –

Children with Autism
and
Children with ADD/ADHD

Ian will discuss the role of diet, medication, exercise and other techniques in their management and treatment. He will discuss other factors that are often co-morbid to ADHD and the reality that nature rarely gives young people just one affliction - they come in multiples.

Ian will offer behaviour management techniques for these youngsters who are most often highly intelligent, but not necessarily in a routine and predictable way.

Ian will share the latest research in these two areas as well as looking at some of the other special needs young people have such as being bullied, family dysfunction, CAPD and many others.

Participants will be given the opportunity to raise issues they are facing as classroom teachers and compare and contrast techniques that work.

The aim of the seminar is to give teachers a fuller understanding of these special children and to discus ways of assisting them to achieve their maximum potential at school.

Christine Richmond (K-12 Principals, Deputy Principals & Executive Teachers)

This seminar provides an intensive opportunity for those who are responsible for supervising and/or mentoring the work of colleagues to update their behaviour management practice.

The content in this seminar is congruent with the entire range of contemporary behaviour management approaches commonly used in schools today. For example, if the behaviour management approach of your school is influenced by Ford’s Responsible Thinking Process, Glasser’s Choice Theory, Canter and Canter’s Assertive Discipline, Rogers’ work, or is one designed by school staff to fit the unique dynamics of your school, this workshop will help you to apply those plans and strategies more effectively. ‘More effectively’ means helping you and your staff to spend more time teaching and less time managing.

During this seminar Christine will:

  • Focus on refreshing your behaviour management understandings and skills.
  • Provide practical helping skills for working effectively with colleagues, parents and students who are under pressure, including:
    • Strategies for defusing angry adults and students
    • Understanding and dealing with resistance in the workplace
    • Detecting time consuming, pointless interventions
    • Constructing minimal interventions that are likely to be successful
    • Dealing with crises

Designing the Thinking Curriculum in Your School          NEW!

Michael Pohl (K-12)

The infusing of thinking into content delivery, the use of the language of thinking and the explicit teaching of thinking is becoming a necessary and ever-present feature of classroom practice.
The issue faced by many school leaders is how can such methodology be imbedded within and across the school – as part of the on-going culture of every classroom?
Drawing on results of nearly a decade of working with many schools across Australia and New Zealand, it became clear that when schools have a clear vision; take small steps with a big picture in mind; provide quality training and support to teachers who continually monitor, reflect on and refine their practice – whole school change can easily be embraced by everyone.
During this intensive seminar Michael will:

  • Outline a five-step process that will assist school and curriculum leaders at all levels in implementing a whole-school approach to infusing thinking into the curriculum
  • Provide frameworks for ensuring that practices such as the explicit teaching of thinking becomes an enduring part of the culture of the school.

Teachers & Students as Questioners          NEW!

Michael Pohl (K-12)

Questions and questioning may well be the most powerful tool we have for teaching and learning. Teachers ask good questions – they are well trained to do just that. But when left to their own devices, do they ask a good range of questions and do they develop learning activities that will see students engaging in a balanced range of thinking tasks?

This seminar will:

  • Challenge teachers at all levels of schooling to examine their questioning skills
  • Demonstrate the need for structures to provide a balanced range of questions and activities that will evoke qualitatively different forms of thinking
  • Introduce the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy and examine how it may best applied to meet some of the challenges ever-present in today’s classrooms
  • Showcase the revised Thinkers Keys and other questioning frameworks to enhance student’s ability to generate not just questions, but quality questions that are worthwhile questions for inquiry.

Inspiring Classrooms
Strategies for Creating Classrooms that Inspire the Students & YOU!          NEW!

Tony Ryan (K-12)

Classrooms are all about learning. Let’s not distract ourselves here. In spite of the plethora of social and technological issues that are endlessly foisted upon school curriculum, our key focus must always be placed upon the quality of the students’ learning experiences.

Yet, these learning experiences can no longer be fashioned by tedium and rote learning behaviours. The competition is too strong these days.  Already, there are online learning opportunities that can create the magic and action that stimulate young brains in 2008.

Our response to all of this? One option is to develop energetic and spirited classrooms that actually encourage students to return, day after day. If you were a student, would you want to be in your classroom each day? In fact, even at your present age, do you want to be in your classroom each day??

This practical and entertaining seminar will provide succinct pedagogical outlines that can create a vibrant and productive classroom for young people. Perhaps, even an inspiring classroom! Yet this type of environment can only be created by those who are inspiring in themselves.

Thus, this session also will directly challenge you to determine your own level of commitment and inspiration to your daily work. Inspiring teachers change the world. Are you one of these?

The Inquiring Classroom

Kath Murdoch (P-6)

In this practical seminar for primary teachers, Kath Murdoch will share a wide range of strategies and procedures that enable students to use an inquiry approach to their learning.  Inquiry based learning has long been recognized as a powerful means with which to develop students’ skills as learners – particularly in the areas of thinking, collaborative learning and self management. There are many ways in which teachers can create environments and plan experiences for learners to facilitate the development of skills and understandings through inquiry. During the day, Kath will address the following questions:

  • How can we assist students in designing and working with questions of their own?
  • What strategies are useful ones for students to have in their ‘tool kit’ for learning?
  • How can we support students in managing their learning and developing more independence in their work?
  • What frameworks can we use to plan units of inquiry with students?
  • What can we do to stimulate and build on students’ curiosity?
  • What contexts/topics/projects suit inquiry based learning?
  • How can we help students develop an understanding of themselves as learners during the process of inquiry?

This seminar will include an inspiring mix of practical activities and examples from real classrooms.

Planning and Teaching Powerful Integrated Units

Kath Murdoch (K-6)

Teaching through integrated inquiry offers teachers and students a wonderful opportunity for rich, connected and engaging learning. These units are effective vehicles for teaching skills and qualities associated with becoming a ‘life long learner’. In integrated inquiry, students learn to learn while they are learning about ‘the way the world works’.

In this dynamic and practical seminar, Kath Murdoch will share some innovative ideas for planning and implementing inquiry based integrated curriculum in the early and middle years.  By sharing a range of examples from real classrooms and engaging participants in hands on strategies, Kath will address the following questions:

  • How do we choose rich and engaging topics or issues for inquiry?
  • How can we link our planning to the interests, questions and needs of students?
  • What frameworks can we use to plan systematically and collaboratively?
  • How can we make meaningful links between learning areas?
  • What teaching and learning strategies can be used to implement a quality unit of work?
  • How can we document our planning efficiently?
  • How can we help students link their learning to ‘real life’ – to do something meaningful with their learning?
  • How can teams work together more efficiently to plan and evaluate a powerful unit
This seminar will interest teachers from the early to middle years of schooling.
