Scholastic knows that your privacy is important to you, and we want you to know that it is important to us, too. This Privacy Policy explains our practices with respect to the information we collect from teachers, administrators, and students through Scholastic Learning Zone (currently located at scholasticlearningzone.com) and the services provided thereon (collectively, the “Site”) in our role as a service provider (or “data processor”) to our school customers. As the services school evolve, this Privacy Policy may change, so please check this page from time to time.

We collect your name, school information, username, password, and other Personal Information (defined below) to permit you to use the Site.

We use Personal Information on behalf of our school customers to provide our Site, to respond to your questions, and to fulfill other business and compliance purposes.

We share Personal Information on behalf of our school customers as necessary to provide our services, respond to requests, and fulfill other business and compliance purposes.

We maintain reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect Personal Information from unauthorized access, use, modification, and disclosure.

What information is collected through the Site?

 

User-Provided Information

 “Personal Information” is information that identifies you as an individual or relates to an identifiable individual.

 We collect the following types of Personal Information from and about you.

  • If you are a student, we collect the following Personal Information directly from you or from your teacher or school administrator (which may be provided via a third-party intermediary working with your school, such as a local education product distributor):
    • Identity information, such as your name, your school, your year, your class name(s), your reading level, and a unique identifier for you.
    • Profile information, including your username and password for our Site, books you have read and had recommended to you, and competition or quiz results.
    • Education records, including information about how you use our Site, such as any comments or ratings you make on content available on the Site, messages sent between you and your teacher about assignments in the Reading Pro Library, voice recordings of you reading assigned material aloud, reading level, school/education information, and information provided by your school administrators and/or teachers.
  • If you are a teacher or administrator, we may collect your contact details from third-party sources, in order to introduce Scholastic Learning Zone to you. We also collect the following Personal Information directly from you:
    • Identity information, including your name, your school, and your country/region of residence.
    • Contact information, including your work email address and telephone number.
    • Profile information, including your username and password for our Site, classes created by you (including class codes) on certain of our services, which students subsequently attend your classes, the activities you assign students in your classes, and the scores achieved by students in your classes. We also collect messages sent between you and your students about assignments in the Reading Pro Library.
    • Marketing information, including your communications and marketing preferences. If you are a teacher or administrator, we may use this information to market our products and services to you, subject to any preferences expressed by you or your school.

Some of the Personal Information we request is required for you to use our Site. If you do not wish to provide such Personal Information, you will not be able to use the relevant services offered on our Site. Some of the Personal Information we request from you is optional. This means that you can elect not to provide it and you will still be able to use the relevant services on our Site. We identify required Personal Information to you by displaying an asterisk (*) next to the field where we request that Personal Information.

If you submit any Personal Information relating to another individual to us, you represent that you have the authority to do so and to permit us, on behalf of your school, to process the information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Site Usage Information

We and the service providers we engage to provide services to your school automatically collect the following information from Site users:

  • Technical information, including internet protocol (IP) address (from which we may derive your approximate location), browser type and version, time zone setting and location, browser plug-in types and versions, operating system and platform, and other information about the devices you use to access our Site.
  • Usage information, including information about how you use our Site and interact with Scholastic Learning Zone. We use essential and functional cookies and similar tracking technologies to collect such information, which includes the referring page that linked you to the Site; the pages or content you see or click on during your visit; when and for how long you visit them; items you download; search terms you enter; and the website you visit when you leave the Site. Cookies are small data files stored on your computer or device at the request of a website. A cookie assigns a unique numerical identifier to your browser and enables us to enhance your experience on the Site (for example, by storing your username, remembering your preferred language, redirecting you to your school-specific page after you log out, and identifying you as a student, teacher, or administrator). We also use cookies to collect general usage and aggregated statistical information, so that we can analyze trends to improve the Site and make it more intuitive. Most browsers can be set to detect cookies and to let you reject them. However, refusing cookies could make it difficult or impossible for you to use the Site or its features.   • Google Analytics is used on the Site. The service uses cookies and similar technologies to collect and analyze information about use of the Site and report on activities and trends. The service may also collect information regarding the use of other websites, apps, and online resources. These tracking technologies will be deployed by us and/or by the service providers we engage to provide services to your school for security purposes, to facilitate navigation, to display information more effectively, and to personalize your experience. These technologies allow us to assign a unique number to you and to relate your Site usage information to other information about you, including your Personal Information. We do not currently respond to browser do-not-track signals.

How do we disclose Personal Information on behalf of our school customers?

We share the Personal Information we collect on behalf of our school customers for a variety of reasons, to the extent that such disclosure is permitted by our agreement with a school customer.

We share information with third parties who need your information to provide services to your school, such as to host our Site, send email or other communications to teachers and administrators, and manage and analyze data.

You may choose to share your Personal Information when you voluntarily post information or content to public areas of the Site.

In addition, we share Personal Information on behalf of our school customers:

  • with our subsidiaries and affiliates as necessary for the purposes set out above, in particular to administer your account, respond to your requests, questions, and concerns, and respond to government, judicial, or other legal requests, or to comply with legal obligations;
  • when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary or appropriate to protect our rights or property or that of others, protect your safety or the safety of others, investigate fraud or respond to a government, judicial, or other legal request (including from an authority outside your country/region of residence), to enforce our agreement with our school customer, or to otherwise comply with applicable law; and
  • in connection with a corporate change or dissolution, including, for example, a merger, acquisition, reorganization, consolidation, bankruptcy, liquidation, sale of assets or wind down of business and in connection with due diligence related to the foregoing.

We may use and share information that does not personally identify any individual (e.g., de-identified or aggregated information) for any purpose, subject to applicable law and our agreements with our customers.

Your Rights

If you would like to request to access, correct, update, suppress, restrict, or delete Personal Information, object to or opt out of the processing of Personal Information, or if you would like to request to receive a copy of your Personal Information for purposes of transmitting it to another company (to the extent these rights are provided to you by applicable law), please contact your school. If you are a parent or guardian of a student, you may also contact your child’s school to make such a request on behalf of your child. 

If you are a teacher or administrator, you may opt out of receiving further promotional communications from us by following the instructions contained in any such communications to you.

Retention

We will retain your Personal Information in accordance with our agreement with the applicable school customer.

Security

We maintain a comprehensive information security program with administrative, technical and physical safeguards in an effort to protect Personal Information within our organization from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, loss or modification. Please note that that no measures can offer absolute security, so we cannot guarantee that information will be totally safe from intrusion during transmission or while stored in our systems. We do have procedures in place to deal with any suspected personal data breach.

If you have an account on our Site, you are responsible for activity that occurs using your account credentials, whether or not you authorized such activity. Please notify us of any unauthorized use of your password or account or any other actual or suspected breach of security, using the details under “Contact Us” below.

Cross-Border Transfer

Personal Information we collect on behalf of our school customers may be stored and processed in any country/region (including countries/regions outside your country/region of residence) where we have facilities or in which we engage service providers, which may have data protection rules that are different from those of your country/region. We do not, however, transfer Personal Information out of China.

Third-Party Services

This Privacy Policy does not address, and we are not responsible for, the privacy or other practices of any third parties, including any third party operating any website or service to which the Site links. The inclusion of a link on the Site does not imply endorsement of the linked site or service by us or by our affiliates.
