When children are actively engaged in an investigation activity, they are often unaware that they are actually learning and doing ‘work’.

By finding an investigative activity that they’re interested in, children often become increasingly self-motivated to explore and learn.

When using a science craft kit, encourage your child to read the instructions carefully before starting, then to explore, be curious, and come up with questions to investigate how things work. If something isn’t quite working, urge them to refer back to the instructions, to discuss with you or a friend what is and isn’t working, and to research other ways that might prove successful. Ask them to describe their thinking and to give reasons for it. And share your mistakes so they know it is not only OK to make mistakes, it is essential to learning!
