Nicki Esler Gill writes books for children. She earned a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from New York University, where she also taught writing. She believes picture books are a special kind of magic. They inspire flights of fancy and snorts of laughter, facilitate precious bedtime rituals of closeness and connection, and engage readers in big conversations. She lives in Melbourne.
Have you been tickled or tackled before? And then decided that you want no more? You can tell others how they play with you. It’s your body, so it’s your rules too!
Have you ever been a chatterbox, with lots of things to say? Or has it seemed your voice has left and gone on holiday? Have you spent the day swinging, spinning, tumbling, giving chase? Or have you snuggled in a blanket in a quiet, cosy place? We are all important, not for what we can or cannot do, but because each child is precious. And every brain is too!
Have you ever said ‘I love you’ when your heart’s all full and warm? Have you asked to have a cuddle when there’s thunder in a storm? Have you ever told your favourite joke? Or sung a lullaby? Have you poured your worries out, and finished with a sigh? Can you see the power in the words you choose to say? Your voice is important! It can make somebody’s day!
